Stonewall Cymru's key priorities for 2008-11

Besides our core work programme of lobbying local authorities, public service providers and government for inclusion, and legislative and policy improvements for LGB people in Wales, we will focus on the following key strategic objectives for the next 3 years:

1. Community engagement

To Work with LGB people so that they are able to play a full part in their communities. To provide information to LGB  community groups and individuals. To increase the knowledge of local LGB service needs within public and private bodies.

 Key target: Regional LGB networks across Wales by 2011.

2. Participation

To facilitate LGB people and groups in Wales to have their opinions listened to and their voices heard by government and service providers. To increase participation by LGB people in the work of Stonewall Cymru.

Key target: to create oppportunities for 3,000 LGB people to participate in Stonewall Cymru.

3. Education

To support schools, LEAs, and education professionals to tackle homophobia and homophobic bullying and combat underachievement of LGB pupils.

Key target: To reduce homophobic bullying in schools by 50% by 2011

4. Employment

To make work a fairer place for LGB people by reducing the numbers of LGB people who experience discrimination and harassment at work because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation.  

Key target: Increase the number of LGB people who feel comfortable in their workplace by 25% by 2011

5. Fair Life Chances

To ensure equitable access to goods and services in the public and private sectors by promoting fair treatment of LGB people. In particular,work with the health service, the housing sector and local government to ensure they understand and are compliant with the goods, facilities and services regulations.

Key target: 100% of Welsh local authorites, housing sector and health boards to have LGB equality embedded into single equalities schemes. Similarly for all other policies have regard to specific issues for LGB staff and customers.

6. Changing attitudes

Challenging overt and residual prejudice against LGB people in the public domain and to work with key media organisations to promote the positive contribution LGB people make to life in Wales.

Key target: To reduce by 50% the level of discrimination felt by LGB people in Wales because of their portrayal in the Welsh media (measured against All Wales LGB Survey 2006)  

7. Community Safety

To reduce homophobic hate crime and its impact by working with LGB people(victims of hate crime), the police, community safety partnerships Crown Prosecution Services, to increase reporting levels, increase police awareness and the number of cases brought leading to prosecution.

Key target: An increase in reporting levels in all four Welsh police force areas leading to increased prosecutions.
