The 2012 WEI has highlighted that many organisations struggle to find open and visible role models for their LGB staff. The seminar will provide an opportunity to hear from inspirational role models from both the public and private sector and to explore the benefits of having out LGB role models. It will also provide a platform for sharing ideas around how to create a culture within your organisation where staff have the confidence to inspire others.

We heard from guest speakers who shared their experiences and who demonstrate best practice from both a private and public sector perspective.

This session highlighted the key findings of our new workplace guide on the role of Straight Allies and featured presentations from inspirational straight allies from both the public and private sector. The guide offers testimony from inspirational straight allies on what they do, why they do it and the impact being a straight ally has had in their organisations.

This session highlighted why it is necessary to ensure line managers are equipped with the skills to manage diverse teams and discussed whether line managers have the skills to deal with workplace issues such as homophobic bullying.

Religion and sexual orientation issues are often seen as mutually exclusive. Our research Religion and Sexual Orientation: How to manage relations in the workplace, found that it is employers who are often anxious about conflict, rather than staff themselves. This seminar discussed how employers may put in place policies and procedures to foster an inclusive environment that takes both into account.
This seminar examined how organisations can benefit from providing career development opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender staff. We heard from individuals who have taken part in Stonewall’s Leadership Programme and employers who have prioritised career development opportunities for their LGBT staff.
Sponsored by Barclays, at this event we highlighted good practice from the WEI 2010 and heard from Stonewall’s top employer, IBM, on their achievements in progressing LGB equality. We also presented the Scottish Government with the award for being the top employer in Scotland for two consecutive years.
Following our research into bisexual experiences in the workplace, we launched our guide for employers into raising the visibility of bisexual people at work. We also heard a personal testimonial from Elizabeth Reiff at Lloyds TSB.
This seminar took a more in-depth look into what the public sector duty means for your organisation. Topics covered included equality impact assessments, consulting and engaging with your LGBT staff and service users, and the setting of meaningful objectives.
An opportunity to hear from three high performers from this year’s Workplace Equality Index; Barclays, Lothian and Borders Police and the Scottish Government.
Each gave a picture of the areas where they have performed best in the index and shared with members how they achieved change within their organisations and tackled opposition where they met it.
The experiences of lesbians and bisexual women in the workplace, how both gender and sexual orientation impact on them and how organisations can better engage with them.
Nathanael Miles, Policy Officer at Stonewall and author of our guide on this topic, discussed the key findings and Nicola Swan, Scottish Workplace Officer, will present some of the recommendations. The research and workplace guide has kindly been sponsored by Lloyds TSB.
He was joined by Evie McLaren and Emma Harvey from the Scottish Government LGBT Network, who discussed their experiences at work.
This seminar explored ensuring your suppliers, contractors and partners also demonstrate a commitment to achieving Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual equality.
Transport for London, 6th in the 2008 Workplace Equality Index, outlined how they promote sexual orientation equality in other organisations by only doing business with those who strive for equality.
Lothian and Borders Police were joined by two of their major suppliers to speak about their experiences in delivering goods and services in a way which reflects the police force's commitment to LGB equality.
Launch of the latest workplace report 'Peak Performance: Gay People and Productivity'.
The session will included a presentation on the themes within the report, with the opportunity for open discussion on the findings.
At this seminar we also launched our recent publication 'Getting Started: A Route Map for Public Services in Scotland', which aims to support public services in making services more inclusive for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender service users.
The seminar explored how some private sector organisations place responsibility for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) equality within their corporate social responsibility (CSR) portfolio, and the benefits this affords.
The seminar also looked at where the public sector places responsibility for LGB equality, ensuring that Diversity Champions understand and utilise good practice in both areas. The session also included a presentation on changes to this year's Workplace Equality Index.
