We all need to plan for the future, to ensure that our families, partners and friends are provided for after our lifetime.

Yet making a will can mean so much more. Leaving a gift to Stonewall in your will is one of the most significant ways to support Stonewall and help future generations of lesbian, gay and bisexual people around the world.

We’ve come so far in our 25 year history, particularly with equal adoption rights, civil partnerships and equal marriage - which finally give gay couples the same rights as heterosexual couples. No longer will same-sex partners fear the loss of their home when their loved ones die or feel the impact of unfair inheritance taxes.

Lots To Do

But, we still have Lots To Do to completely change hearts and minds and eradicate homophobia around the world. We are focussing on:

  • Our Schools - the majority of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people still suffer homophobic bullying at school and almost all of them hear the word ‘gay’ used as an insult.
  • Our Streets - one in six lesbian, gay and bisexual people have been the victim of hate crime or a hate incident in the last three years and one in ten has experienced physical assault.
  • Our Workplaces - 2.4 million people say they’ve witnessed homophobic bullying at work and 800,000 have witnessed physical abuse.
  • Our Sports Fields - seven in ten football fans hear homophobic abuse and there are still no openly-gay top flight male footballers.
  • Our Friends Abroad - millions of people around the world are persecuted simply because of how they were born. Being gay is illegal in 78 countries across the world and being a lesbian is illegal in 49. In five countries same-sex sexual activity carries the death penalty.

That’s why, although we’ve made remarkable progress, we won’t stop until every lesbian, gay and bisexual person – from every background, every neighbourhood and every parish around the world – can live their life without fear of discrimination.

By leaving a gift in your will to Stonewall, you’ll be helping us to continue the fight against homophobia for as long as we’re needed. If we’ve come this far, imagine where we’ll be in the next 25 years?

Leaving a Legacy Gift

It may be easier to leave a legacy gift to Stonewall than you think. Simply direct your gift to Stonewall Equality Ltd, Tower Building, York Road, London, SE1 7NX (Registered charity number 1101255) when making your will. You can either leave a fixed sum ('Pecuniary Legacy') or part/all of your estate once other gifts have been distributed ('Residuary Legacy').

You may find the following wording useful if choosing to leave a Residuary Legacy:
"Subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give the whole/ ___% of my estate not otherwise disposed of by this my Will to Stonewall Equality Ltd (UK Registered Charity Number: 1101255) of Tower Building, York Road, London, SE1 7NX, for the general purposes of Stonewall and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge."

Lifelong Friends of Stonewall

Please do let us know if you decide to leave a legacy gift to Stonewall as we’d love to welcome you as a Lifelong Friend. Lifelong Friends receive a unique purple Stonewall pin, bespoke communications about our work and are invited to a number of intimate events.

In February, as part of our LGBT History Month celebrations, we were joined by Lifelong Friends and Stonewall Youth Volunteers at the wonderful Bishopsgate Institute in London. We looked at the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Arcive which is housed there, discussed gay rights over the last 25 years and heard from Ruth Hunt, new Chief Executive, talk about the future of Stonewall.

We look forward to seeing our Lifelong Friends again at our upcoming events:

New research published by Stonewall and The Co-operative Funeralcare starkly reveals that lesbian, gay and bisexual people grow older fearing discrimination and isolation.
